She is portrayed in the Gospels as a neurotic woman, possibly with a past, yet she is the first to encounter the risen Christ and he charges her with the responsibility of proclaiming the resurrection. These Gospels include more than the standard canonical Gospels, covering also such writings as the Gospel of Thomas, the Apocryphon of James, and the Gospel of Mary and others. The book is divided into six major sections. The first examines the origins and meanings of the term Gospel.

Then follows a section on early collections of saying including, of course, a study of Q. A third section traces the movement from the dialogue Gospels through narratives about Jesus to the Gospel of John. Mark, Matthew and Like receive thorough consideration in the fourth section, followed by an exploration of the early extant harmonization s of the canonical Gospels (Justin martyr, Tatian, Epistula Apostolorum, etc.) The concluding section deals with various Gospel fragments known from papyri and from casual mentions in the church fathers.

Throughout Ancient Christian Gospels, the author provides all technical information (attestation, manuscripts, etc.) needed by the scholar, but also translations of all data, general introductions and explanations in an effort to make the book accessible and useful for the general reader. Helmut Koester is John H. Morison Professor of New Testament and Winn Professor of Ecclesiastical History of Harvard University and author of the widely used two-volume Introduction to the New Testament.

Outline History of the General Baptists of Loughborough, 1760-1975

By Rev Dr Joseph Brewer BA. On 5 November 1844 William Logan was one of the founders of the Scottish Temperance League, the first non-denominational total abstinence society in Scotland. William Logan was the son of Andrew, weaver, and Euphemia Logan of Damhead, near Hamilton, Lanarkshire. During his first stay in Rochdale from 1840-42 he appears to have met his future wife, Janet Lorimer (b 1826), who was residing at the time with the family of John Lorimer, her uncle. She was a daughter of the latter's brother, James Lorimer (b 1786), a farmer of Keir, Dumfries, Scotland. In 1850, William Logan married Janet Lorimer at Providence Chapel, Rochdale, and in 1851 was living at Manningham, near Bradford, Yorkshire, where a daughter, Sophie, was born on 12 June 1851. The family later moved to Glasgow, where they resided at 18 Abbotsford Place, and it was there, on 1 May 1856, that Sophie died at the age of four years and 10 months after suffering for several weeks from a gastric illness. Sophie's death led William Logan to write Brief Notice of a Short Life as a preface to Words of Comfort for Parents.

Bereaved of Little Children, a widely circulated collection of essays edited by Logan. A second child, a son, also William Logan, was born in Glasgow about 1855, and by 1871 he was a student of arts at the age of 16.

Hardback with dust cover published 1985 by Prometheus books

Rare, see all pictures for condition

The perfect gift for book lovers!
