In recent years there have been quite a number of martial art 'biographies' and accounts of personal journeys. Most of them are quite interesting, even if they do follow a somewhat set pattern. This book was actually quite different to the normal "I trained in this for a couple of years, had a couple of fights and now look where I am and what I have learnt". I will state this right now: this is one of the three books in this genre that I would recommend above all others. The other two are Marcus Trower's "The Last Wrestlers" and Robert Twigger's "Angry White Pyjamas".
Martin's journey in this book is less about the training, per se, and more about the author's questions and how he went about investigating them. It looks at how he interprets the information he gathers, where he looks and what (non-standard) methodologies he adopts. He offers advise and information on a range of subjects that are not normally covered in these books.
It should be pointed out that this is not a "I know it all, I am now an expert" kind of book; rather he admits his innocence and his naivete, he recognises his own faults, he experiments with different ideas. For this, I give it a hearty recommendation.
